Featured Article In the United States today one group that is frequently targeted for bullying is students with disabilities. As we all know, anyone who is different is often the target, but the question is what are we doing about it? Often young adults with disabilities have low self-esteem; a primary reason for that is bullying. There is no limit to what bullying in elementary school and middle school can do to a young child. No one wants to be treated that way by anyone....

Accessibility Small business will bear the brunt of improving access for disabled people under proposed changes to the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. That's the conclusion of a study commissioned by the Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy, which based its findings on construction costs, staffing and building size.Most of the proposed recommendations are focused on removing architectural barriers: modifying public entrances and restrooms; enlarging employee-only areas; and lowering light switches, alarms and thermostats....

Customer Service The National Association of the Deaf filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice against PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc. The complaint alleges that PETCO refused to provide qualified sign language interpreter services for four deaf couples who registered for PETCO's dog training class in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in violation of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The couples provided and paid for interpreter services to ensure effective communication and meaningful access to PETCO's dog training class....

Growing up in Seattle, Renae Goettel thought attending a boarding school for blind students would help prepare her for life in "the real world." It wasn't until she enrolled at San Antonio's Trinity University that she realized just how unprepared she really was. "Going to a high school for blind kids was good in a way, but it held me back in another," Goettel says. "They taught me how to read Braille, use a cane, navigate through a city and how to use public transportation -- everything they thought a blind person would need. But then when I left there, I didn't have everything a blind person could need. I had to adapt to life on my own without all those specialized facilities"...

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity joined the Chicago Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities, the Open Doors Organization, and the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau during an event at the Chicago History Museum to unveil Easy Access Chicago, a comprehensive visitor guide for travelers with disabilities. The 52-page guide provides detailed information about Chicago's accessible offerings, allowing visitors with disabilities to make informed decisions about travel during their stay in the city....
