Looking for the right toy to give a child is a year-round concern for parents and a significant factor in family purchases. For the parent of a child with special needs, the choices can be even harder since the usual box listings to aid selection may not be enough information to make a wise choice for a child whose physical or mental challenges might affect how the child uses the toy. BASF Markets Universal Design From Professional Free Press Release News Wire

The often challenging building principles of Universal Design, Eco-Friendly Construction, Energy Efficiency and Home Automation are coalescing in an unprecedented manner at a new BASF-sponsored prototype residence in Paterson, NJ. Known as the Better Home, Better Planet, Paterson Showhouse, the three-story, 2,900 sq. ft. dwelling will initially serve as a design “clinic” for homeowners, builders, architects and government officials. The home is later destined for a local charity, St. Michael’s Church, which plans to house a local paraplegic teenage boy and his family. ...

A Special Effort: Starbucks is Reaching Out to People With Disabilities — Both as Employees and as Customers From The Wall Street Journal Online

Thirty-six-year-old Starbucks' employee Michelle Penman, who has cerebral palsy, spends three hours getting ready for work every morning. Because she has trouble speaking and has limited mobility, customers must write down their orders and place them on her wheelchair. She returns with their coffee and food on a tray or in a backpack affixed to her motorized wheelchair. Starbucks Corp. wants to make Ms. Penman a literal model employee... to make its stores more inviting to customers with disabilities, as well as their caretakers, family members and friends. ...

Agency: Outdated Rules Keep Disabled Out of Work From AP & Boston Globe

Federal rules used to determine who's disabled are nearly 50 years old and need to be updated to reflect economic, medical, and technological advances, a government panel says. Many Americans with disabilities are willing and able to work but remain thwarted from seeking jobs by Social Security Administration guidelines that discourage economic independence, according to the National Council on Disability report. ...
